Surface Loading – Wall or Roof

(Revised: 04/01/08)

This screen displays the system-generated surface loads and allows for user additions to each surface.

Load List:

Type

See Load Types

Units

Usually pounds per square foot or pounds per linear foot (English Units) for system generated surface loads.  However, user loads may also be pounds or Kips (English Units).

Origin

ENV indicates system generated Environmental Loads such as Wind or Snow loads.

USR indicates user defined/input loads.

Shape

Load Shape may be Rect = Rectangular, Entire = Entire Surface, Point = Point Load, Line = Line Load and Spec = Special Shaped Load.

Affecting

All surface loads must be defined as Affecting one or more of:

Frames = Frm

Bracing = Brc

Girts = Grt

Purlins = Pur

Panel = Pnl

Wind Loads are applied separately to Frames or Bracing and Girts or Purlins or Panel since each framing type requires a different magnitude of wind design load.

Description

The load description is either System generated or User defined.  This load description is also shown in the “read only” field below the load x-y coordinates table.

Load Geometry/Location and Magnitude

Loads are defined on each surface with X/Y coordinates and a load magnitude.  X/Y origins are as shown.

Wall Surfaces:  The X/Y origin for wall surfaces is always located at the lower left corner of the wall when viewed from the outside of the building (Elevation View).

Loads are applied IN to, Out of, Towards the Top, Towards the Bottom, Towards the Right or Towards the Left of the screen when viewed in elevation mode.

Roof Surfaces:  The X/Y origin for roof surfaces is always the upper left corner of the roof when viewed from above the roof (Elevation View).  The Y-origin is either the ridge or the high eave of a single slope shape.

Loads are applied IN to, Out of, Towards the Top, Towards the Bottom, Towards the Right or Towards the Left of the screen when viewed in elevation mode.

Insert

This button allows you to add user loads that will show up as a row of data in the Load list.

Revise

This button allows you to select a user load from the Load list then revise that load.

Delete

This button removes a row(s) of user inserted data from the list.
