Crane Runway Data - Beam Data

(Revised:  05/09/2016)

The Crane Runway Data - Crane Beam Data tab is used to define the Crane Beam, Channel, and Rail for this runway location.

The Deflections Limits and Impact Factors are defaulted based on the Building Code.

Options:

Shape

From this drop list, select the material shape for the Beam and Channel.  Selections are 3 Plate Built-up, S Shape – Hot Rolled, S Shape with Channel, Wide Flange – Hot Rolled, and Wide Flange with Channel.  This selection will make the following three fields activate depending upon the choice of the Beam and Channel.

Beam Size / Web Thk

From this drop list, select the Crane Beam Size for Hot Rolled members, and Web Thickness for Built-up members.

Channel Size / Top Flange

From this drop list, select the Crane Channel Size for Hot Rolled members, and Top Flange size for Built-up members.

Bottom Flange

From this drop list, select the Bottom Flange size for Built-up members.

Rail Size

From this drop list, select the Crane Rail Size.

By Others

Select this check box if the Wide Flange or Wide Flange with Channel are not being supplied by the Steel Building Manufacturer.  When this check box is selected, the other check box saying Crane Beam Will Laterally Support Column will automatically be unchecked.

Future Crane

Select this check box if the frames are being designed for a crane system to be installed at a future date.  Checking this box will automatically check the By Others box and deactivate (un-check) the Crane Beam Will Laterally Support Column option.

Crane Beam Will Laterally Support Column

This box is checked by default for Top Running Bridge Cranes (TRBC) but may be un-checked if non-standard diagonal crane beam bracing is used.  The column support provided by the runway system is located at the elevation of the top of the runway beam and is considered to fully support both flanges of the column.  This function has no meaning, and is inactive for Underhung Bridge Cranes (UHBC).

Design Crane Beam

This button will allow you to do a preliminary design of the Crane beam.

Optimize beam-channel configuration

This option is selected by default and allows the system to select the most optimum beam with or without a cap channel.  Uncheck the box and select a Shape of Wide Flange with Channel or Wide Flange – Hot Rolled as required.

The screen below will pop up to display the resulting runway beam design information.

Description: Description: crane 4

Check Crane Beam

This button will check the Crane Beam information that is input manually in the screen, per the AISI design.
