LDI Level 1 Welcome and General Information

Purpose of the LDI

The purpose of The Leadership Development Institute is twofold.  First, VP Building’s current leaders have established the LDI to identify our potential leaders of tomorrow, to intensify their developmental process, and further their career with VP.  In so doing today’s leaders have clearly recognized how critical effective leadership will be to the long-term success of this company.

Secondly, the LDI was created to address VP’s short-term and long-term need for strong, competent leaders.  Participants are expected to demonstrate rapid growth in their ability to lead and manage work during and following the program’s learning process.

Participant’s Goals

Participants will:

1.       Demonstrate significant growth in their ability to lead people and manage work.

2.       Achieve tangible business goals through business/work improvement projects.

3.       Enhance personal effectiveness by achieving personal/professional goals.

 Workshops

The workshops will be highly interactive sessions led by Ed Champagne (Director of Learning and Development, VPU) and Tim Wilson (Manager of Learning and Development, VPU) as well as other training professionals from outside the organization.  The program has been improved each year, and has undergone a major “remodeling,” including the introduction of a three-level program.  Each session will be fast moving, with many group exercises and discussions.

The LDI Learning Process

LDI incorporates a learning process that begins before the first workshop with a reading assignment and ends with the completion of goals months after the final workshop.  Ideally, the process will never end.  The extended learning effort should develop into a life-long learning habit for each participant.  Learning activities are meshed with the workshop curriculum to provide a continuous learning process.  The results and experiences of all pre and post workshop activities will be integrated into the workshops through reporting, sharing and evaluating sessions within the groups.

Commitment to attendance, exercises, goal setting and participation in discussions is imperative to the learning process.  Attendance is of extreme importance.  Only true emergencies should stop a participant from attending all of each workshop.  Please make your management and work groups aware of your schedule, so that meetings and other events can be scheduled around LDI.  LDI takes precedence over almost any other VP meeting.

Sponsorship

Ideally, each participant will select a “sponsor” for the duration of the program.  The sponsor will serve as a “coach” to the participant.  The sponsor’s role will be to assist with selecting projects, evaluating participant progress and offering constructive feedback.  The participant will meet regularly with his or her sponsor to review learning progress and project status.  This partnership approach to learning should assure successful achievement of participant and company goals.  It is up to each participant to select a sponsor.  This feature of LDI has tremendous potential to add to the effectiveness of the leadership development process.

Program Coordination

Tim Wilson is the coordinator for the LDI program.  He is responsible for all workshop facilities and arrangements before and during the sessions.  Tim can be reached at the California office at 209/669-4200 (direct) or by email (twilson@vp.com).  You will receive almost all communication regarding the program via email from Tim or at this website.

Travel Arrangements

All travel arrangements should be made with VP’s travel agency (Garner Travel).  Janice is available at 901/748-9318 or by email (travel@vp.com or listed as “Travel” in the VP address book).  Specific information pertinent to travel will be provided via email for each workshop in a separate correspondence.  The expenses for hotels, non-group meals, and travel to and from LDI workshops shall be paid for from the travel budget of the participant’s department (typically paid for by the participant and then expensed).  Please plan to purchase airline tickets approximately four weeks in advance of your travel date in order to take advantage of advance-purchase discounts.  I will send details about what times you should plan to arrive and depart early enough to allow you to do this for each workshop.

Workshop Logistics

Week 1

Workshop I will be held at Victory Ranch, a corporate training facility in the Tennessee countryside 1 hour from Memphis.  Participants not close enough to drive should plan to fly into Memphis, Tennessee where you will be transported to the facility.  Driving instructions will later be provided for those driving.  Plan to arrive on Sunday evening and depart Friday afternoon.  More details will be sent later (and be available at this website) to help you with making travel plans.

The format of this workshop will be a little different than typical business meetings in a hotel meeting facility.  Please bring warm and comfortable clothing, as we will spend some time outdoors (jeans, sweaters or sweatshirts, coat, gloves).  The outdoor activities will require some walking, so please bring a suitable pair of shoes; hiking boots might be the most comfortable considering the chance for cool or wet weather.  This is a lodge-type atmosphere so jeans or casual pants are the “uniform” for the week.  A link to additional information about Week 1 will be available here soon.

Week 2

This workshop will be held at a location yet to be determined.  All participants should plan to arrive on Sunday evening, and to return home on Friday afternoon.

q       Rooms will be reserved for you, but you will have to make your own travel arrangements.  You will be responsible for payment of your room (to be reimbursed for along with other travel expenses).

q       Lunch and dinner will be provided Monday through Friday.

q       Wear business-casual clothing.

q       If your room reservation requirements differ from Sunday through Thursday night, please call Janice (901/748-9318) prior to the workshop as soon as your travel schedule is set, so that she can adjust the rooming list accordingly.
